Specialized Instruction for Students Needing Adapted Curriculum
Inclusive Programs
Milder Musical Arts offers specialized private instruction and when possible and requested, inclusive group instruction for students requiring modified curriculum. Emphasis is on developing the basic building blocks of music with emphasis on ear training, solfege singing, keyboard playing, ensemble, rhythm activities, movement and creativity. A foundational goal for all students is the development of "inner hearing," which makes transposing, improvisation and composing easily accessible.
You will notice these are the same goals we have for all our students. The difference in this program is that we modify the instruction to whatever extent we need to in order to take into account learning styles and preferred sensory modalities. In other words, we have an individualized educational plan for each student and assume no limitations. Every student has musical abilities, and for children with special needs, music can be the one vehicle that enables them to truly find a way to express themselves and enhance their self-esteem. The success in this area will carry over to their other school subjects, improve their communication skills, and can improve their physical coordination.
For any age child or adult, each student's musical talents and interests will be encouraged with specialized curriculum and teaching methods combined to elicit high self-esteem, creativity, musical understanding, appreciation, and proficiency. Emphasis is on the joy of music, and increasing not only technical skills but also the honoring of self-expression (composition) and ensemble playing (as appropriate). Goals will be established and curriculum chosen based on individual needs.
Self-Esteem Is The Key
Relationship and continued successes are the key to building a strong self-image and the willingness to tackle tasks that may appear overwhelming at first. As the founder of Harmony Road said, music students can become fearless warriors, willing to perform, not afraid to make mistakes, just happy in their ability to create music. Although each student is unique, all can experience this joy. We want this for your child and will provide the supportive environment and structured lessons that continually encourage it.
The study of music offers the building blocks that will translate to increased proficiency with many other tasks. Musical harmony relates to life harmony altogether. Music provides the opportunity to employ almost all the sense modalities, hearing, sight, touch, kinesthesia or movement. Not many other activities can offer this. Sound is in and of itself healing, and students will learn to not only hear and feel music but to gain the freedom to explore their own inner music and song writing capabilities. Milder Musical Arts is a place of inclusion, acceptance, and support. Let us help create a specialized curriculum for your child!
This instruction is available at the Milder Musical Arts facility on Thursdays and Saturdays. Other days are available upon request.
